Less Sleep More Fat

Going to bed should have always been a natural bodily function, but these days we need gadgets to make us sleep. Perhaps a few stark truths will help make us want to do it naturally again. Gone wrong?

The cavemen did it without aid. To be fair, they had no distractions except maybe if the tiger roaring in the distance would breach the safety barrier and that the bonfire would burn bright all night. Each day’s routine was a fight for survival. By sunset they were literally dead tired.

Advocates of wellness swear by it. Doctors advise us to have enough of it. Irritatingly cheerful, healthy, happy and well-balanced individuals are walking advertisements of the benefits of good quality sleep. Everyone knows sufficient sleep is paramount. Yet, as if in unison, most of us go contrary to this wisdom. As a mater of fact, many proudly claim to have trained their bodies to function with just a few hours of sleep.

“With so much to do, going early to bed seems such a waste,” they say. One would be hard pressed to dispute this mantra. It would be rare these days to find people who gladly go to bed before midnight.

Every animal needs sleep. Some, in its natural state, need 20 hours, others make do with just a few each day. In a study involving lab rats, the subjects were found dead after being deprived of sleep for five days.

Homo sapiens, the most highly adaptable of all species and reputedly the most intelligent, seem bent on turning nature on its head. We treat lightly the importance of sleep though we know how significant it is to our survival. Yet, on the other hand, we resort to taking power naps and going to ‘sleep bars’ and invest in gadgetry to help us snooze.
